TIMES OF REFRESHING

 

Times of Refreshing This picture is a few years back, but it's purpose remains. This was when Denny & I went on a much needed vacation and enjoyed some down time. Let's face it, we all need it. Working and ministering to people is a full time job. If we try to go like hamsters on a wheel, we will soon discover burnout. Jesus, our Lord, also knew the necessity of resting from one's labor. It started in the beginning of creation when God made the world and people, and after He was all done, He rested. He commanded us to do likewise. Then came Jesus, who IS God, and He set the very same example when He was here on the earth. Look at this passage... Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves. (Mark 6:30-32) So many times, we can be excited about what we do, and it can drive us to a point of overdoing, and never really getting rested and refreshed. But that's not how we are designed. In my book, Ten Canons in My Heart, I addressed this very issue. Some people are not highly motivated, but most of us enjoy hard work. I have experienced burn out in the past, and it was not pretty. As Denny & I prepare for a couple weeks off to rest and visit friends, I want to encourage you to consider this message. If you can't remember the last time you went on a trip, or just took some time to relax and NOT do any work, then let this be a reminder that we were not created to be the energizer bunny. Take some time and begin to plan your way of rest, so God can refresh your heart and then you can go back to doing what you love with fresh energy and ideas. God can use these quieter times to speak to us, encourage us, and renew our hearts. Be blessed my friend!
